Read traveler

User review sites have changed the way most people plan their trip, giving us a hugely useful for the evaluation of hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and similar tool. TripAdvisor.com is the big kahuna, with over 20 million reviews, most of the hotels - but also less traditional as B & B, villas and private homes - as well as restaurants and attractions. TravelPost.com is another, owned by Kayak.com and recently relaunched; like his father-aggregation air passage, TravelPost.com collects feedback from various websites such as Citysearch.com, Yahoo! Travel and IgoUgo.com. Check out Yelp.com for local 'takes on restaurants, shops and other businesses, or OpenTable.com, which guarantees that the critics have eaten in restaurants that qualify.

User reviews are useful, but not infallible, so keep in mind the following tips:

• Read between the lines, wondering if the writer shares his thinking, or if a negative review is the result of a persnickety traveler or a singular bad experience. As a general rule, the more people contributed, the most valuable global ratings become.
• Always see how recent was the message. The establishments are quick to change, move or close.
• Always Look on the photos posted by users; that may be more eloquent than words could hope to be.
